Video Editor Competition!

I recently entered a video editing competition hosted by a small YouTuber (zaksdailyfashion), and it turned out to be far more rewarding than I expected, even though I didn’t end up getting the job. The challenge was simple on the surface: download the raw footage, edit it in your own style, and submit your best version. But once I started, it became clear how much creativity and personality could go into the same clips. I spent hours refining transitions, experimenting with pacing, and adding subtle effects to make the video feel engaging without overdoing it.

When the results were announced and I didn’t get the job, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed. Still, that feeling didn’t last long. What surprised me most was the community that formed around the competition. The YouTuber himself was very talkative and happy to discuss design choices and give feedback. As well as that, other designers were able to connect and help each other with their own unique approaches and styles, creating a very friendly online community. It reminded me that editing isn’t just about landing a job — it’s about constant learning and collaboration.

Looking back, I’m genuinely glad I entered. I pushed myself creatively, built new connections, and came away with a better understanding of video editing software (e.g. Premiere Pro). Not every opportunity has to end in success to be worthwhile, and this experience proved that sometimes the real win is everything you gain along the way.
